Frequently asked questions

I installed RichDirt, but i can´t see it in 3ds Max.

RichDirt is found in the ´Standard´ Maps. It works both for Scanline and V-Ray. The RichScene plugin is found in the ´Standard´ Materials. In Max 2023 you find RichDirt in the Material Editor, then Material/Map Browser", category "General".

How do i install RichScene ?

RichScene is installed with RichDirt. I.e. if you install RichDirt RichScene is added automatically. After starting 3ds Max you find it in the materials (not in the textures). If you purchased a key you need to start 3ds Max -2- times (technically the key is transferred from RichDirt to RichScene after the first start, so RichScene ´sees´ the key after the second start).

I ordered an upgrade but it i dont see the license

RichDirt Extreme requires an Extreme Upgrade. Likewise RichScene requires a RichScene upgrade. If you accidentially ordered the wrong upgrade send a mail, we will try to find a solution for you.

I want to do a crossgrade (RichDirt to RichScene)

Send a mail. Technically the shop does not support this. But there is an easy solution. Just ask.

I upgraded to V-Ray 3,4,5,6 and see a crash ?

V-Ray 3,4,5,6 is not directly compatible with V-Ray 2,3,4 for plugins. Download the new version (it is free).

I want to use RichDirt with Render Nodes, how are licenses counted ?

Render nodes don´t require extra licenses, all your investment in extra hardware is valid.

How can i determine the version of RichDirt that i have installed on my machine ?

RichDirt comes as max plugin in a file called RichDirt.dlt. 3ds Max has a tradition to call textures .dlt, materials .dlm, and objects .dlo. Since RichDirt is a texture map plugin its name is .dlt. Windows however does -not- display version information for .dlls that do not have the name .dll. Rename the .dlt to .dll, then right click with your mouse. Windows now shows the version information in the ´Details´ tab.

I have an idea / wish to be added to RichDirt - whom to contact ?

If you have wishes to add parameters / features to RichDirt don´t hesitate to send a mail using the contact page at contact .

I did a video using the trial version - do i need to do anything ?

The trial version is indeed free. You can create a video, and use it as you like, you don´t need to add a ´made with RichDirt´ statement. It is welcome to add a facebook like, or a post of an image that you did !

Distributed bucket rendering (DBR) with V-Ray

For Max before 2017 things are easy: To use RichDirt with ´dbr´ copy C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\plugins\richDirt2.dll to each of your slave machines (same folder on the slave machine). After Max 2018 Autodesk changed paths, so the plugin now -must- reside in C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins. You need to copy the full directory including eveything in it. C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\RichDirt3dsmax2023_vr5\ for 2023 and vray 5. 2022 or vray 4 would then be in RichDirt3dsmax2022_vr4

Backburner with V-Ray

Network rendering via Backburner is technically different from network rendering via ´Distributed Bucket Rendering´ Like for ´DBR´ richDirt2.dll is required on every machine. One way to achieve this is a common directory for all plugins. To use a common directory one -must- use UNC paths. See the Autodesk documentation on Backburner and UNC paths. If you use UNC paths simply copy the dll once to this common directory. If you don´t use UNC paths there are 2 ways to get things to run: - copy the dll manually - or simply run the installer on each render node machine. The render nodes do -not- require licenses.
